Singing Exercises

Here are some singing exercises to get you started:

  1. N-ah.  When you start this exercise feel the buzz on the hum and then open to an ahh.  Remember to lift your soft palate when you open your mouth.

    2. Cat meow on a descending scale.  Make the sound as nasty as you can. Don’t worry about trying to make a pretty sound, just want the sound strong and forward.

    3.  5 note scale on ahh. Try and keep the soft palate raised as you sing this exercise.

    Singing through the break.

The Italian term is ‘passagio’ – the passage from the lower to the higher register.  You want to build a connection between your lower and higher notes so that it sounds like one voice.  Try to keep the sound light, don’t ever feel like you are pushing.

Encouraging Resonance:

You want to develop a strong resonant voice so that it rings out so everyone can hear it.  Remember you need this when singing into a microphone because the microphone simply amplifies what you are doing. If you have a thin dull sound that is what the microphone will pick up.
